Much like every other season in NYC, Spring is unpredictable going from warm to cold to rainy and back all in the course of an afternoon which makes layering all the more necessary. For this reason, if there is one must-have addition to your daily style that I truly believe is worthy of a splurge it is a statement layering piece as it is a great help in creating endless outfit possibilities. As someone with a very small budget, I am selective when it comes to these kinds of purchases, leaning more towards colorful pieces due to my primarily monochromatic wardrobe, however nothing beats a nice neutral with a twist like this Yona New York wrap shawl.
I bought this shawl during Full Figured Fashion Week last summer but only got around to wearing it this past winter. With a three-string tie at the waist, and a dramatic asymmetrical hem, it is a versatile piece that adds effortless sophistication to a look, as evident by the amount of compliments I receive whenever I wear it. During the winter I would often pair the shawl with a turtleneck sweater and skinny jeans, wearing it open or tied depending on how cold it was outside. Of course this isn’t the only way to style this piece nor is it only meant to be worn in Fall/Winter. So in anticipation of the warmer days ahead I dug out my go-to Spring outfit, a chambray button-down and skater skirt to highlight the three ways this shawl can be worn in the Spring. The second and more casual way I’ve worn this shawl is as a cropped waterfall front vest. This look is accomplished by flipping the shawl upside down so to create that drape detail at the front, and tying the waist-tie strings in a bow at the back. I would normally wear the shawl this way with a solid color long sleeved dress or with a quarter-sleeve blouse and jeans, but it does add a visual interest to my chambray top and skater skirt combo.
I have to say that wearing this shawl as a crisscross front waistcoat has become my favorite. To create this look, I kept the shawl upside-down, crossing the lapels in the front and tying the ends at the back. I especially love now the black-trim blends well with the black of my textured skater skirt almost coming together to create a unique fit-and-flare silhouette.
