As of last Monday (January 11), my blog is officially a year old. My first post was “2015- New Year, New Things To Try” in which I wrote about the trends that I wanted to try during the year. As I continued to write posts and featuring this list was always in the back of my mind, as I took it as a public declaration to myself to break out of my comfort zone and try new things. So I thought with it being a full year (and a week) later a good way to commemorate the blogiversary of Big City, Curvy Girl, Thin Wallet would be to take a look at that list and checking off my progress. A Merry Christmas and a Cozy New Year

Of the gifts I received this Christmas my favorite has to be this cable knit poncho. The cherry blossom pink collaborated well with the plum of my medallion jeans that I got this fall at the Big Fat Flea. While it is a bit big on my petite frame, that is all part of the over-sized style. It is comfy, warm and loose, perfect for a casual day or night out during the holidays. This has been the welcome addition to my winter wardrobe this year as NYC has been mildly chilly lately making a heavy coat unnecessary. The brown Windsor boots from Avenue completed this laid back look by adding the right amount of edge to an overall soft feminine chic outfit. Who says comfort can’t be in style? Continue reading →

Commanding Attention

While it took me a while to actually enjoy fashion, I will admit that I always had a thing for historical costume, particularly those of the 18th century and the regency. Its no secret that I love history. It’s been my favorite subject since the first grade when I first learned about Elizabeth I and today I am a proud historian who does research via study of symbols/iconography and material culture. Part of that love has also lead to me incorporating a couple of history inspired pieces into my wardrobe with things like velvet ribbons, cameo brooches, lace gloves, parasols and my most prized possession – a military zip jacket. To date this is one of those pieces in my wardrobe that rarely makes an appearance save for special occasions like the start of fall. With its gold-crested button front, mandarin collar and curved seams, it turned out to be one of the best accompaniments for my new retro dress. Continue reading →

Summer Lights

There is nothing better than unplanned and spontaneous time with friends, especially in the summer. This week the weather in NYC has been very forgiving, so a friend and I took advantage by taking a nice stroll through Astoria, Queens. It felt great to spend some time catching up after spending so much time away from each other with our hectic work schedules. It was doubly special because the casual outing gave me an excuse to wear a piece I got from the first Fashion to Figure sample sale I attended back in February. Continue reading →

Even Flowers Need Water

The past few days have been very interesting weather wise in NYC. One day it is very humid, the next day it is cool, followed by heavy thunder storms out of no where that dissipate to clear sunny skies. The bi-polar nature of this season so far has been very fitting as it matches my mood, which has been quite melancholy due to recent events. The weather, coupled with my emotional state really made it real hard to “dress up” when I would actually venture out of the house, especially when all I wanted do is stay in bed all day. Its funny how a shopping trip and an impulse buy can change your attitude.
