As of last Monday (January 11), my blog is officially a year old. My first post was “2015- New Year, New Things To Try” in which I wrote about the trends that I wanted to try during the year. As I continued to write posts and featuring this list was always in the back of my mind, as I took it as a public declaration to myself to break out of my comfort zone and try new things. So I thought with it being a full year (and a week) later a good way to commemorate the blogiversary of Big City, Curvy Girl, Thin Wallet would be to take a look at that list and checking off my progress. Job Interview Bag Essentials
As you are now well aware, I was laid off before the holidays and have since been going into the city for some job interviews. Although an interview outfit post is soon coming, I also wanted to share what is in my bag and my current interview bag essentials. I should note that this list of items are a bit winter specific in some cases and that I omitted the obvious such as my cell phone, keys and wallet. Take a look! Continue reading
When You Are Laid-off Before the Holidays…
I am unemployed. Those are three words I did not even think I would be saying at the start of the new year. (If anything I thought it would have been more along the lines of , “I got promoted.” ) The unfortunate reality is that the business world lacks humane decisions and when it comes to creating budgets for the upcoming new year they have no problem with making the staff “leaner” by vastly reducing its numbers regardless of the festive holiday season. I, like many others in the world, was a casualty of this practice, which brought on feelings and thoughts I was not anticipating. True, nothing lasts forever but when you have been working for approximately 2 years just get your foot in the door only to have it slam in your face, like I have, it makes you feel like you failed and stand no chance in actually starting a career. You blame yourself even though there was nothing you could do to change the decision, but through it all, here are some things you should remember: Continue reading
A Merry Christmas and a Cozy New Year
Of the gifts I received this Christmas my favorite has to be this cable knit poncho. The cherry blossom pink collaborated well with the plum of my medallion jeans that I got this fall at the Big Fat Flea. While it is a bit big on my petite frame, that is all part of the over-sized style. It is comfy, warm and loose, perfect for a casual day or night out during the holidays. This has been the welcome addition to my winter wardrobe this year as NYC has been mildly chilly lately making a heavy coat unnecessary. The brown Windsor boots from Avenue completed this laid back look by adding the right amount of edge to an overall soft feminine chic outfit. Who says comfort can’t be in style? Continue reading
My First (Plus Size) Cosplay Experience
I attended my first Comic Con back in 2011 with a friend. While my friend burst into the Con scene in full Star Wars Imperial Officer regalia, I, on the other hand went with a Sailor Moon t-shirt I purchased the week before, worn under a black quarter-sleeved, knee length hoodie. (This was back in the day when I was still uncomfortable being in heavily populated social situations and always wanted to be covered.) Prior to this I had known about cosplay*, having seen examples on Tumblr but it was a whole other thing seeing it in person. I was in awe at the things people had managed to recreate and I was jealous of my friend for not only did he have the means to own such a detailed cosplay, but the ability to wear it as well.
