After the awesome time I had at theCURVYcon last year I knew that I would be attending the next one. I liked the very idea that Cece and Chastity had to move it to New York Fashion Week so that plus size fashion would be showcased and celebrated at the same time as straight size fashions. If anything the date change challenged the fashion industry to take notice that they are missing out. This year I was granted the chance to have the Platinum experience which was only made better by the fact that I got to share it with friends some of which I met last year, as well as my best friend, Jade.
Day 1- Brunch, Shopping and Karaoke
While I had planned to attend the morning workout session, I woke up feeling pretty ill so I never made it . However, from what I gathered from Jade, the session was very rigorous and event though everyone was clearly excited to participate, it left many of them tired and sweaty. This was a major shift from last years yoga session but I think the thought behind it was to not be repetitive as well as introduce participants to different kinds of exercises that can be done.
After getting her Target workout swag bag, Jade came down to Madison Square Garden to meet me so we could head to the Platinum brunch together at the Target Gallery in Chelsea. The menu called for quiches, associated fruit, muffins and scones as well as mimosas, espresso and iced tea. Last year the brunch was exclusive to only influncers, yet it was an awesome idea on the part of Cece and Chastity to open it up to Platinum ticket holders as well since it allowed for us to reconnect with people we met at the con last year.
We each received a Target gift bag that had a $25 gift card, two nail lacquers and wipes for makeup removal as well as for underarm refreshing – all in all a pretty good con survival kit. After the brunch we headed back to the con venue for some shopping. I really liked the fact that there were more brands in attendance this year but I was surprised and disappointed to see that most of them didn’t allow for actual shopping. For the most part it felt more like a preview of their collections that you could peruse before ordering online with some of the coupons you received in your swag bag. I did purchase two online exclusive bralettes from the Ashley Stewart booth so I’m finally able to try on that trend for myself.
As shopping for the evening came to a close, we were ushered up to the second floor for a CURVYcon first – the fashion show. I will say that being Platinum ticket-holder did allow me to get a pretty good seat, since I got to sit behind plus size male model, Zach Miko and actor Daniel Franzese of Mean Girls fame. It was great to see a diverse and inclusive show with model. While it was streamed live, you can still catch the looks that walked online via Yahoo Lifestyle. All of the looks featured will be available at Dia&Co. and I already have a list of items that I will be requesting in my fall box.
As for what I wore, I decided that both major outfits for the weekend would be from Torrid in honor of their NYFW show. For the first day I chose this printed cold-shoulder skater dress. I usually stay away from this halter-neck style of dress because it doesn’t work well with a bra, yet I found these race back bra clips from Lane Bryant that made it so that I could wear bra without any issues. Because of how low the cold shoulder detail was I did find this dress to be a bit flirty which is something I really don’t do much so it was nice to take a step outside of my comfort zone in that way. I had originally planned to wear heeled ankle booties, but I paired the dress with my metallic flats since I had fallen down the stairs the night before running out of the university after class, leaving my left foot pretty swollen. I completed the look with a plum colored lipstick and crossbody bag that matched that color accent from the dress.

After the fashion show and panel, Jade and I got changed fand took an uber down to Herald Square with Bridgette for the Platinum Karaoke Party. We actually missed the start since we made a stop to get some dinner first so we missed out on most of the karaoke but we did get to enjoy the awesome desserts and dancing that went on later on that evening.
For this party I went with this City Chic Maxi I got from my recent Dia box. What I like about is that unlike the London Times maxi I received in July, I can actually walk in this one with no problem. With the flowing maxi silhouette, high-contrast print accents and brass-tone buttons, I kept accessorizing to a minimum, just adding a bold red lip. Much like the Torrid cold shoulder dress, this piece is also a transitional piece that I’m looking forward to styling with ankle booties and a leather jacket.

Day 2- Panels, Swag bags and Party
After a full first day, day two of the con was spent at the venue. Just like the day before, I arrived a bit late for the first panel, but as a result I was one of the first people to get into the Platinum lounge so it wasn’t all bad. At the lounge we got to pick up or Platinum bags as well as addition items from Lane Bryant, Modcloth, Seven 7 jeans and Trusst Lingerie.
The panels covered topics from relationships, entrepreneurship, plus size fashion modeling, and a holiday fashion preview by Lane Bryant. I think the one panel that really stood out was the “Dear Retailer” panel where everyone was given the chance to ask questions as well as voice their unfiltered concerns and opinions to select brand heads from five different brands. Having sat through this panel last year I noticed that this year it was a bit more heated with participants challenging the brands to do better with things like their designs, fabric choice and visibility plus representation in their ad campaigns. I’m hoping that by hearing the emotion from those brave enough to take the mic along with the supportive cheers from the crowd that these brand representatives may work towards bringing the changes we wish to see in the industry.
I chose a fall palette of olive and brown for my final look for the weekend. The neckline of this challis lace dress is pretty low-cut, a fact that Jade and Brooke pointed out many times throughout the day, so I may actually close that up a bit so I can wear this dress to work. For the brown accents I went for these booties and double buckle belt . The belt helped compliment this otherwise highly feminine look.

As I write this, we are now about to enter October and theCURVYon is still a topic of discussion both on and off social media. It was a very nice weekend and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Cece and Chastity have in store for next year. We weren’t told much other than the date (the week of September 7th next year) yet the fact that it will be taking place during NYFW for a second time is very promising.
What do you think about theCURVYcon this year? Will you be joining in next year?
