The Jetset Life

This year marked the 20th anniversary of My Chemical Romance’s second album, “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.”  It was the album that basically served as a formal intro into the shift in my music tastes as a freshman in high school. And, yes I am fully aware that I’m aging myself with this info.

Fast forward a few years and I’ve since settled into the metal/goth scene,* yet MCR remains a top band for me that I keep listening to on the regular. Sadly, I never got to catch one of their shows back when they were at the height of their popularity, and I wasn’t lucky enough to score a ticket this weekend to their upcoming tour, so I continue to be a sidelined fan longing for their next album to drop while wearing (somewhat, but not really) obscure references to their songs like this tank designed by Kerin Cunningham.

This piece was one of a few items from her REVXNGE: 20th Anniversary Collection released in June of this year. It was a limited time preorder kind of thing, so if you’re a fellow MCR fan, I recommend giving her Instagram a follow to see if she drops more of these in the future.

Summer Noir (feat. Foxblood)

It is rare for me to have a moment when I see something and think to myself that “I must have this” and immediately buy it without much of a second thought, but it when it does happen its probably because  Foxblood dropped something new on their site.  (Even if it is something that I have to purchase via Afterpay, I make it mine.)   The minute I saw this wide leg, tie top jumpsuit as I was scrolling through my Instagram feed, I gagged.  It is everything I’ve ever wanted in a summer outfit that I didn’t even have to look for.

“You’re a tea drinking, highly educated, otaku, goth black Latina that listens to metal. That’s as out there  as it can be.” – Jonquel of JonquelArt

Truer words have never been spoken. I’m a “weird” Afro-Latina girl. I accepted that years ago. I watch anime, read comics and get excited by new Harry Potter and Disney merch/collections whenever they drop but weirder still for most people, I listen to A LOT of metal. Beyonce may be everyone’s queen but mine are Tarja TurnenSharon den Adel, Simone Simons and Floor Jansen. Yes, I did just list a bunch of Scandinavian names. What can I say? They are masters of the genre over there.
I should pause here to explain something. Metal is a very broad term that covers countless sub-genres, one of them being symphonic metal – a genre I was introduced to around 2005 with “Once,” Nightwish’s final album with lead singer Tarja Turnen. I found out about this band thanks in part to the internet and my obsession with the “Phantom of the Opera.” (Long story but true.) I somehow got my hands on a copy of “Once” and with the first verse of “Sleeping Sun” I was hooked. Continue reading
